We are all down this way, and have endured many of these over the last 11 months - Ivan, Dennis, and now, Katrina.
There is one so very valid point - first responders and even govt. responders cannot drive south into these storms - they cover entire states - all of MS and AL and as far north as the TN line, winds exceeded 110 MPH sustained.
For example, 36 miles south of Birmingham at 8 PM Sunday night, it took 4 hours to drive in it to my center in Birmingham - winding around trees and power poles that had snapped in half.
That is hundreds of miles north of the center of the storm.
Also, people do not realize how long such winds last - east of such storms last 14 to 18 hours over any one spot - then an equal amount of time as it passes.
Many of us, despite being able to recover far more quickly than those on the coast, lose power for a week or more - water, too.
As the storms shift about, people need to realize that it takes time to position necessary force and then assess where that force is needed most. The federal Govt. began positioning to respond days ahead of the storm's arrival and they began moving convoys of troops and supplies south [30 MPH max for military vehicles] on Sunday night - I know, because I see it each time this happens.
It is just so very unfair for people who do not know what these things are like - much less Katrina that was 7 times as wide and deep as Camille, to judge people so harshly, or quickly.
I am also very upset that people do so little to really help themselves - I mean immediately after these events - all the men organize and quietly begin work - no one really has to speak - as gangs of men with axes and saws and carts and ropes just work - for days, weeks, months. The families cook, retrieve water, tend to children and clean. No one panics, screams, or begs for this or that - people just dig in and work.
The real blame here belongs to a system that places and sustains people in a perpetual state of dependency - rather than husbanding them to adulthood. We must embrace that there must be a sense of responsibility that comes with individual liberty - that only comes from a sense of self-worth which is based upon self-respect - and metered by what we "do" - not how we "feel"
We are so glad that Jonathan and Foamy are out there and that we support him so strongly - while direct, and spirited, he is so often dead on!
